PhD position in Microbial Ecology

The Laboratory for Microbiology (, Ghent University ( invites applications for a PhD position. We seek exceptional candidates to complement our focus on microbial biodiversity, biogeochemistry, ecology and taxonomy. We are looking for highly motivated candidates interested in in silico analyses of microbial and functional diversity in environment metagenomes. This will be in close collaboration with wet-lab microbiologists but will not require hands-on lab work. The successful candidate should enjoy teamwork, including the supervision of bachelor and master students, as well as problem-solving and technical challenges.



Profile and skills

  • Master in bioinformatics, biotechnology, biology, environmental sciences, bio-engineering or equivalent 

  • Strong affinity for bioinformatics. Knowledge of Linux, Python and R are a prerequisite 

  • Experience with sequence analyses pipelines (eg mothur, qiime, MG-RAST) and phylogenetic analyses tools (RaxML, Mr Bayesian, Arb) are an advantage. 

  • Good oral and written communication skills in English are strictly required

  • Enthusiastic, motivated, result-driven and critical personality

  • good organizational, writing and communication skills

  • able to work well both independently and in a team environment
