PhD position in Microbiology

The Laboratory for Microbiology (, Ghent University ( invites applications for a PhD position. We seek exceptional candidates to complement our focus on microbial biodiversity, biogeochemistry, ecology and taxonomy. We are looking for highly motivated candidates interested in the development of a semi-automated, miniaturized pipeline for high-throughput isolation of microorganisms. The successful candidate should enjoy teamwork, including the supervision of bachelor and master students, as well as problem-solving and technical challenges.



Profile and skills

  • Master in biotechnology, biology, environmental sciences, bio-engineering or equivalent 

  • Strong affinity for microbiology, in particular isolation/cultivation of bacteria. Experience in microbiology and knowledge of basic microbiology skills are a prerequisite 

  • Good technical background 

  • Knowledge of Python and/or R is an advantage 

  • Good oral and written communication skills in English are strictly required  

  • Enthusiastic, motivated, result-driven and critical personality 

  • good organizational, writing and communication skills  

  • able to work well both independently and in a team environment
