Like the last two year, LM-UGent participated at the “Dag van de Wetenschap” (translated: Day of Science, see http://www.waarofnietwaar.be/programma.html).

This is a yearly event organized by the Flemish Government to bring science to a broad audience and to show how science and technology change our daily lives.

Dr Kim Heylen explained how micro-organisms are involved with global warming in a session of “Simpel gezegd” (translation: Simply said). She explained this complex topic using objects from our daily live, like champagne corks and an apple. LM-UGent also had a booth on the science market. There, several scientists from the lab, under the lead of Timo Suttels and Anne Beckers, explained the research we perform on bacteria associated with food, greenhouse gas emissions, Antarctic, humans, plants and animals.

The youngest visitors  had the opportunity to draw with their own bacteria.
